Design Engineer (Multiphysics)

The working environment

The « Core and Fuel Studies » Group within the “Safety and Modelling Expertise » Competence Centre is in charge of the TE activities related to the fuel cycle, core design, safety evaluation and core exploitation support for nuclear reactors for the Belgian Utility.

It also performs the criticality, shielding and activation assessment of fresh and irradiated fuel.

The group is subdivided into three operational subgroups, each one under the responsibility of a sub-group leader :

Cycles Studies, incorporating Cycle Studies activities;

Neutronic studies & Tools, incorporating all activities related to Criticality, Shielding, Activation, Residual Heat and Fuel Data Base(s);

Core Multiphysics, Methods & Support, encompassing cross-cutting activities and common projects within the range of Core & Fuel Studies expertises.

Your function

In the Neutronic studies & Tools sub-group and in synergy with Core Multiphysics, Methods & Support, you will be in charge of core and fuel physics studies and associated developments in the domains of core multiphysics.

The main tasks in these areas are:
Engineering studies in the domain of core and fuel physics using industry-standard methods and simulation tools;

Developments of core neutronics and core thermal hydraulics models and methods, including multiphysics approaches;

Simulation and analysis of the core and fuel behaviour in different core operating conditions;

Core-related contribution to multiphysics transient analyses;

Support to the Utility in coordination with the Cycles Studies sub-group activities, in particular operational core transient simulation.


You are a civil or industrial engineer, specialized in nuclear energy, physics or electromechanicis, or B.Sc. in physics. A practical proficiency in the neutronics and core multiphysics areas is a definite asset;

You are keen to develop a technical expertise;

You are interested in widening your technical competences across various disciplines of Core Physics (including neutronics but also core and system thermal-hydraulics, nuclear fuel thermomechanics);

You speak English and French or Dutch with a good practice of the other language;

You apply self-verification with a rigorous mind and you deliver quality within tight schedules;

You are good listener, dynamic and you like teamworking.
