Based in our Brussels headquarters, the editor reports to the

Director of Communications and Outreach. S/he works closely with

the Washington based VP for Policy, the Brussels based

publication team, and regional programs. The editor will be

expected to assume primary or full responsibility for the editing

of Crisis Group publications in French, and contribute to some

translating and editing from English to French and vice versa.

This is a maternity cover position expected to last from 1

September 2017 to 1 February 2018.


  • Lead on the editing of Crisis Group publications in French,

including reports/briefings, op-eds, commentaries and other

outputs, to ensure clarity, house style and consistency with the

organisation’s policy positions;

  • Review translated outputs from English to French and French to

English to ensure clarity and consistency with house style;

  • When required, edit or translate English publications into

French and vice versa;

  • Assist the publication team as may be required in the final

stages of publishing Crisis Group reports and briefings,

including by liaising with regional program/project directors and

field analysts on last-minute issues related to the final text;

  • Assist in the drafting and editing of West and North African

country reports for CrisisWatch, Crisis Group’s monthly early

warning bulletin on conflicts around the world (produced in


  • Provide, consistent with priority editing responsibilities in

French, additional support as needed to the publications, media,

digital and research units.

  • Mother-tongue French and excellent written level in English;

ability to write clearly and concisely in both;

  • Proven proofreading and editing experience, primarily in French

but with a good working level in English;

  • At least 5 years of experience in drafting papers primarily in

French, but with a good working level in English, and a proven

understanding of research techniques;

  • Familiarity with written styles of campaigning organisations or

newspapers, and excellent understanding of how to adapt style to


  • An excellent eye for detail and a meticulous commitment to


  • An interest and an aptitude for conflict prevention, management

and resolution issues, preferably in a West African, Central

African or North African context;

  • University degree in a relevant field such as international

relations, history, African studies, communications, journalism

or literature;

  • Ability to work under pressure and manage multiple projects to

tight deadlines; and

  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
