Since 2007 the Unit of Medical Entomology of the Institute of Tropical Medicine has been involved in the surveillance of indigenous and exotic mosquitoes in Belgium. Due to the northward expansion of the exotic Aedes mosquitoes in Europe and their possible involvement in pathogen transmission, the Belgian federal and regional authorities have decided to finance a three-year project « Monitoring of Exotic Mosquitoes in Belgium » (MEMO).

Assignment :

  • You are in charge of the daily planning and execution of the sampling activities of the MEMO project. You use state-of-the-art trapping methods.
  • You are responsible for the morphological and molecular identification of the collected samples.
  • In collaboration with partners of the Medical Entomology Unit, you will develop DNA barcodes for both native and exotic mosquito species that are being captured.
  • You develop genetic markers to identify the origin of the intercepted exotic Aedes species.
  • You develop a monitoring plan for exotic mosquitoes in Belgium, based on the practical experience and taking into account the import risk and ecological profile of exotic Aedes mosquitoes, and various climate scenarios.
  • You work closely with scientific staff who coordinate the project and with a technical assistant who helps you during field sampling and laboratory work.
  • You provide support with report writing and risk analysis.
  • You write and publish scientific articles and present the results at national and international congresses.
  • You supervise and assist students and trainees.
  • You contribute to writing research proposals for the Medical Entomology Unit.

Offer Requirements


    ENGLISH: Good

    FRENCH: Basic


  • You have a Master’s degree in Biology or equivalent with expertise in entomology and ecology.
  • You have a strong interest or experience in entomology, and more specifically in the identification of insects.
  • You are willing and motivated to write a doctoral dissertation on this topic.
  • Experience with biological fieldwork, molecular techniques, Office and R is a plus.
  • You are in possession of a driving license B and you are willing to drive regularly and sometimes long distances.
  • You work independently, have good communication and organisational skills and a flexible approach to work.
  • You work accurately, even during busy periods.
  • You speak and write fluently in Dutch, French and English.
